Animal Research Centre: swine and poultry trials in Spain

In-house experimental units to test feed, additives and animal health products with scientific rigour.

Experimental units built for demanding studies

Our facilities are designed to run controlled trials that meet the scientific standards required by regulators, journals and your customers.

Swine unit

  • Suckling and weaned piglet trials.
  • Growing-finishing pigs and sows.
  • Digestibility and palatability studies.
  • Feed additive validation.

Poultry unit

  • Broilers: growth performance and carcass yield.
  • Laying hens: egg quality and laying persistency.
  • Vaccine and probiotic efficacy.
  • Animal welfare studies.

Other capabilities

  • Ruminants (fattening calves and sheep).
  • Minor species.
  • Multi-species studies for registration.
  • Tailor-made protocols.

Biosafety level 2

Isolated rooms and strict containment protocols allow us to work with pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Clostridium perfringens or Eimeria in controlled challenge models.

Types of trials

Our scientific team helps you define the experimental design and sample size so that results are statistically sound and publishable.

Swine research unit

Nutrition, health and welfare trials across the whole production cycle.

Sows

  • Gestation and lactation trials.
  • Effect of diet on prolificacy.
  • Colostrum quality and immune transfer.

Piglets (pre-starter)

  • Palatability and feed intake.
  • Post-weaning additive validation.
  • Gut health and diarrhoea control.

Growing-finishing

  • Growth curves and feed efficiency.
  • Carcass quality and intramuscular fat.
  • Formulation cost optimisation.

Digestibility trials

Metabolic cages and specific protocols to determine the real nutritional value of ingredients and raw materials using chemical markers.

Health challenges

Trials under controlled infection (challenge models) in isolated rooms with strict biosafety control.

Poultry research unit

Facilities to validate solutions for broilers and laying hens.

Broilers

  • Performance: ADG, feed conversion ratio and mortality.
  • Digestibility: metabolisable energy determination.
  • Gut health: microbiota and villus morphometry.
  • Carcass yield: cut-up weights and meat quality.

Laying hens

  • Laying curves: persistency and saleable eggs.
  • Nutrition: calcium and phosphorus levels.
  • Welfare: housing systems compliant with EU rules.
  • Additive efficacy: pigments, enzymes and prebiotics.

Egg quality laboratory

Objective measurement of internal and external egg quality: Haugh units, shell strength and thickness, and digital yolk colour.
